General Mathematical Software (Mathematica and Matlab and more)

Mathematica and Matlab are available on all computers of the Science center and many other computers on campus. Mathematica is a symbolic manipulator (which can do computations with letters and symbols) and Matlab is an interface for numerical methods. However, there is a cross over: Mathematica has a large numerical capacities, and Matlab has a symbolic manipulation toolbox (presently not available on classroom computers) powered by Maple. Both software come with tutorials. We list some other resources available on the web. The Math department also has some copies of Maple on some of the computers, and of GNU Octave, a UNIX software similar to Matlab.

GNU Octave is a high-level interactive language, similar to MatLab, for numerical computations. It is available on neal, evelyn, and emmy and has an online manual.

Number Theory Software: PARI-GP

PARI-GP, a package that does high-speed computations in number theory. We have version 2.1.4 installed on our Linux machines. =To use gp on a machine other than evelyn, copy the file evelyn:/etc/gprc into your home directory as .gprc (note the "dot" at the start of the name of the copied file; the original does not have the "dot".)
