Smith College Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Statistical Data Analysis Tools

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Smith College supports a number of statistical packages that are available for general use. This is the website of a data analysis tutorial in which basic statistical computing with R, Stata and SAS, will be illustrated by using an Excel spreadsheet (comma separated) .

Most of these software packages are installed in the Science Center computer labs located in the Engineering building, Bass Hall, Burton B01, 301, 302, 209 and the Mathematics and Statistics Forum on the 3rd floor of Burton Hall. Many of these machines boot to either Windows, Mac OS X or Scinix (Linux). Some packages are also installed on computers in Seelye, Jahnige and other locations on campus.

The tutorial covers reading in the example dataset, performing simple analyses and creating graphics. Other packages are also available, including MPlus, HLM, and MLwin. Please contact Nicholas Horton for more details.
