Math 233: An Introduction to Modern Algebra

Grades and Expectations

Grades will be based on Like basketball and violin, math is learned by doing not by watching. Class participation is critical: I expect that you'll do your part to keep the energy level of the class high. I also expect that you attend class every day; if illness or another serious problem prevents you from coming, let me know.

Homework

There will generally be two problem sets due each week, usually on Tuesday and Friday. Due dates are noted on the assignments and on the syllabus. The four lowest homework scores will be dropped. Collaboration is encouraged, but each student is responsible for I expect each homework to take two or three hours to complete. If it takes much longer (or shorter), talk to me in class or office hours.

  1. Problems for the first week (January 26-30).
  2. Problems for the second week (February 2-6).
  3. Problems for the third week (February 9-13).
  4. Problems for the fourth week (February 16-20).
  5. Problems for the fifth week (February 23-27).
  6. Problems for the sixth week (March 2-6).
  7. Problems for the seventh week (March 9-13).
  8. Problems for the eighth week (March 23-27).
  9. Problems for the ninth week (March 30-April 3).
  10. Problems for the tenth week (April 6-10).
  11. Problems for the eleventh week (April 13-17).
  12. Problems for the twelfth week (April 20-24).
  13. Problems for the thirteenth week (April 27-May 1).

Exams

Exams are self-scheduled at the Science Library, and are closed book and closed notebook. You are allowed to bring one 3x5 index card to the first exam, two 3x5 index cards to the second, and three 3x5 index cards to the final. At least one problem on each exam will be taken from the homework with minimal modification. Calculators will not be allowed on the exams. The exams will be held:
