Born in England, I moved to South Africa and then Australia with my family. I completed an undergraduate degree B.Sc (Hons) at the University of Sydney before coming to the USA for graduate school. I was awarded a Ph.D. in May 2004 by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Illinois , Urbana-Champaign. My PhD advisor was Nigel Boston. My research interests are in algebraic number theory and group theory.

From 2004 to 2007 I was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Since 2007 I have been a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Smith College.

More details about my professional training and background can be found in my curriculum vitae. See the sidebar above for links to my publications and current course webpages.

Other Activities

I run the mathematics department's monthly problem contest during the regular academic year. Here is this month's problem with instructions on how to participate.

I'm also the local organizer at Smith for the Putnam Examination. This is a challenging mathematical problem solving contest held on the first Saturday in December each year. If you're a student interested in participating or you want to find out more then talk to me. Students signed up for the exam have the option of taking a one credit special studies (Math 400) that I offer on Mathematical Problem Solving.

I'm one of the Smith College Change Ringers who ring in the bell tower in the Mendenhall Center on the Smith Campus. Information about bell ringing can be found here. We're always looking for new ringers so if you're curious, feel free to come to one of the weekly practices.
